Review: Honest Beauty

I’m a sucker for all things Jessica Alba lately. Her Honest Company has really helped me see the light in terms of understanding that not every company actually cares about their customers. I love that she takes the time to educate herself and anyone buying her products. When I heard she was coming out with Honest Beauty I was a little bit skeptical… I normally am not a fan of organic skincare and beauty products. I know that’s lame and wrong, and I really don’t have a good reason for it either. So I decided to shut myself up and signed up for the trial. Here’s what it came with:

honest beauty trial kit look inside

1. Refreshing Gel Cleanser

This was my favorite thing in the trial. First, it smells lovely. It smells like lavender essential oil and happiness in one little bottle. It also has yucca root extract and sponaria and chamomile! I’m not going to pretend I know what that all means but I’m sure if I did more research I would see that it works wonders. This starts as a gel and then becomes a magical foam once you rub it in your hands. I’m telling you – you’ve never used a more fragrant cleanser before. And it’s not synthetic fragrance either, which is reassuring. The scent is natural and real and honest (duh). My skin has been killing it in the adult acne department, so while this didn’t necessarily clear up any of my breakouts it also was not supposed to.

2. Beyond Protected Daily Beauty Fluid

Can we first just talk about how creepy this name is? Beauty fluid? Bye.

Moving on. This is a little too thick for me, and right now it’s fall so there’s not an epic need for SPF 30 in my book. Yes, protecting your skin is important but this busy bee works indoors and rarely sees the light of day (unfortunately). The formula is also incredibly thick and left my face feeling heavy and sticky. Great for a day lounging by the pool, but not for a day spent staring at my computer. After one failed use I decided to retire this sample until the sun comes out again. So in approximately a bajillion days (New York Winters: they suck).

3. Even Brighter Everyday Moisturizer

This lightweight moisturizer is truly wonderful. It feels silky smooth on the skin, is absorbed right in with minimal work, and again smells divine. Definitely the opposite of the beauty fluid. I’ve been using this morning and night and while my skin isn’t necessarily brighter I’m sure that using t for 4 days is not exactly enough to tell. And by the way, the whole organic fragrance thing is really blowing my mind – I feel like I’m walking into an apothecary when I’m in my own bathroom. Sorry to keep saying it but THIS STUFF SMELLS GREAT!

4. A Small Cosmetic Zipper Pouch

I’m not going into detail about this – you get the picture.

And then there’s the whole I can trust this brand thing. There’s not a lot of those out there, but The Honest Company has won me over. Honest Beauty Products are formulated without: SLS, SLES, sulfates, parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde carriers, PEGs, MCI/MI, steareth-n, synthetic fragrances, or dyes.

Overall I’m incredibly happy with this trial. I would love to try their makeup products in addition to the skincare lines. And I’d be interested to see what kind of toners and other cleansers they make. I was able to get these products as a part of my free trial. I paid only $5.95 for shipping, although I do have to call to cancel before they charge me $50 for a renewing membership. I would highly recommend setting yourself up with a free trial if you’re open to trying something new this fall. Other than my favorite mom and pop stores, I’ve never tried a nationwide organic skincare company’s products before. I truly have to say that I am pleasantly surprised: the products smell wonderful, are made responsibility and feel great on my skin.
