Self Care, Skin Care, and Getting Used to My PostPartum Body

I’ve always had body issues, and I always will. But being a new mother adds a new level to it: I’m proud of my body for creating a life and in awe of how it all just happened. But I’m ashamed of my body for the way it looks now and the obvious changes it has weathered.

Getting used to the stretch marks and my new physical limitations can be draining, so I’ve made the decision to put self-care pretty high on my list of priorities. It can be challenging to overcome my self-imposed body dysmorphia, but I’m making a conscious effort to find beauty and positivity in this new me. The new me, after all, did bring a baby into this world. My first step in getting used to my postpartum body? Taking better care of it. For me, that starts with skin care.

I’m allowing myself to really indulge in high-quality skin care, something I have almost always avoided. I’ve always been drawn to drugstore brand items, and while there are some wonderful products out there, I’ve learned that there are some things you simply can’t cut corners with. Skin care has turned out to be one of them.

When I say skin care I don’t just mean my face – often we forget how important it is to hydrate and care for the rest of our skin. I’ve written about Kayo Better Body Care before and their amazing body creme. But that was just the tip of the iceberg – Kayo Better Body Care’s products are to-die-for luxurious oil blends that get to work immediately, and I’ve fallen back in love with them postpartum. Here are my favorites:

Body Beautiful Oil – Vitamin Boost

Kayo Better Body Care Body Beautiful Oil

This blend of oils and signature extracts has truly been perfected. With the Body Beautiful Oil, my skin feels instantly hydrated, smells luxurious, and remains glowing for a full 24 hours after applying. Its lightweight formula is easy to apply (a must for new mamas), and a little bit of product does a lot of heavy lifting.

The combination of Macadamia, Kukui, and Coconut oils give the Body Beautiful Oil an island-vibe scent, while the additional avocado and acai oils make sure it smells like a luxurious vacation, not like drugstore sunscreen.

I apply mine every night after my shower – it’s become a ritual that I refuse to skip. After a long day, there is nothing more calming than the scent of this lightweight oil melting into my skin.

Bonus: I love that even though this is an oil, it comes with a lotion-style pump. Makes application super easy, and a lot less product goes to waste.

Kayo Better Body Care Vitamin Boost

Kayo’s Vitamin Boost combines the most essential vitamins to be applied topically so you get your daily dose of beauty.  With a combination of Vitamins B3, B5, C, D3 & K, this serum brightens and nourishes – something my dull skin definitely needs.

And since this product is unscented, I love the Vitamin Boost for daily use on my face as well as my body. With the brightening properties of Vitamin C, my acne scars have begun to lighten. Combining it with the Body Beautiful Oil for use around my waist and on my stretch marks keeps the beat-up skin there hydrated while possibly lightening my tiger stripes.

Restructuring Gel – Stretch Mark Intensive Action

Mustela Stretch Mark Intensive Action Cream

I’m proud of my stripes, but I can’t lie: they are intense. The biggest ones are about an inch wide. Yeah, I’ll let that sink in for a minute. I know I can’t completely get rid of my stretch marks, but I can certainly give it my best shot.

The intensive action cream seems to work best on newer stretch marks. I very rudely got new marks when I came home from the hospital. Don’t know how that happened, but it did, and since I had this cream handy I was able to make sure those marks never saw the light of day. They don’t do wonders on my huge stretch marks, but combined with the Kayo Better Body Care products it does help to lighten them.

Mustela Restructing Gel

This gel is meant to help lift and firm, something my belly can definitely get some help in! I’m trying to accept my new postpartum body, but that doesn’t mean I can’t call in some extra support, right?

Indulging in a nightly self-care ritual and investing in my skin is something that I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m glad that I’m finally taking the time to do it. These products are on the pricier end of anything I’ve ever recommended before, but that’s because they’re truly worth every penny. And you don’t have to be a new mom to need them!
