There’s something about the summer that, for whatever reason, makes me love wearing makeup. I have no idea why. You would think that with the humidity and all that I’d be rocking the natural look. And while I generally wear little to no makeup on the weekdays, I love getting dolled up on the weekends. This past weekend was probably the first time I had a full face of makeup on in a couple of months, and I realized how much I’ve missed it. My Summer Beauty Staples are relatively inexpensive. Plus, I’ve been using most of these items for a long enough time to be able to tell you that they work, and that they rock.
For My Face:
Physicians Formula Super BB 10-in-1 Beauty Balm Cream
Using since January 2014
I start with the best BB cream on the planet: Physicians Formula BB Cream (see my original review here). When I first started wearing this the compliments were non stop. I look brighter and much more well rested with it. In the summer I tend to get darker, so I like to combine the light/medium and medium shades. I blend with my hands and not a beauty blender or any kind of sponge. It makes for a much faster application and less maintenance. One less thing to clean! And the coverage is so good that no cover up or concealer is needed. (Side Note: Does it bother anyone else that the name Physicians Formula is missing the apostrophe?)
For My Cheeks:
Benefit Cosmetics Dallas
Using since: Summer 2006
This is an original for me. The summer before my senior year of high school was when I really started to understand makeup a little bit more. The girl at the Benefit Counter at Macy’s gave me a complete face makeover. Dallas had actually just launched, and when she put it on my cheeks I immediately understood the slogan: “outdoor glow for an indoor gal.” It’s the perfect shade. And no matter how often I switch up my look, I always come back to this blush.
Benefit Cosmetics Sunbeam
Using since: Summer 2006/2013
This is also (sort of) an original for me. Before it was called Sunbeam, this liquid bronzer was in a larger jar with a small white cap and without a brush. I can’t recall the name, but the same Benefit girl at Macy’s showed it to me, and it introduced me to the idea of highlighting my cheekbones. When they relaunched it as Sunbeam a few years ago, I think I made quite the scene at my local department store. I purchased one immediately and proceeded to wear it every summer since. It adds a healthy bronzed glow to my look.
Benefit Cosmetics Watt’s Up!
Using since: Summer 2013
I love this champagne colored highlighter. It’s great for adding a not-that-dark glow to my face. And now that contouring is out and strobing is apparently in, this will definitely be getting some extra love.
For My Eyes:
Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Push-Up Liner
Using since: Last month! June 2015
I have been a loyal fan of Stila’s felt tip liquid liner for a while now. But I’m also a Benefit gal (which you can clearly tell by the other three products preceding this one), so when Benefit released this waterproof gel push up liner I was really too excited. It really does stay put: after a day at the beach and a 2 hour sweaty yoga class my eyeliner was still perfect. I’ll be doing a full review soon, but since it ended up on this list you can probably go ahead and assume that I love it. I’m bad a surprises.
Urban Decay ‘Naked’ Palette
Using since: Yesterday (don’t judge me)
How can I call myself a beauty blogger when I don’t even have the Urban Decay cult favorite eyeshadow palette? Well first of all, I don’t call myself a beauty blogger anymore. So there’s that. And second: I finally decided to treat myself to this classic over the weekend. I rarely wear eyeshadow, but I figured that my birthday was as good a time as any to step my game up. I’m enjoying playing with the different combinations and shades.
For My Lips:
Stila ‘stay all day’ liquid lipstick
Using since: Summer 2013
Again, I still owe this one a full review but OH MY GOD THIS IS THE BEST LIPSTICK EVER. I really mean it. It goes on as a liquid and dries into a velvet but still moisturizing lipstick. I have incredibly dry lips so I’m used to the lipsticks that I wear giving me chapped lips within hours. But this stays creamy and keeps my lips from drying out. Plus: the pigment is gorgeous, and the color lasts all day. A++ here.
Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15 in Berry, Tulip, or Untinted
Using since: Summer 2009
When the day doesn’t call for bright lips, I still like to have some kind of color. The Tinted Lip Treatment from Fresh is ideal for its moisturizing powers and the variety of beautiful shades. I’ve been rocking these different ones since M and I started dating. I love how subtle the color can be, or how you can layer it on for a deeper hue. The shades don’t necessarily last though, so I make sure to keep it on hand throughout the day.
My look has definitely changed throughout the years, but as I get older I love knowing which products are the ones I can lean on. We all have our can’t-live-without-them makeup and beauty staples. Which ones are yours?
